Fertiliser blends were first produced in the USA in 1936, with commercial scale blending becoming an established part of the US industry through the 1950s.
Across Europe, blending developed in the early 1960s and gradually increased to the present day. Until recently, the blending business model was to produce a limited range of products with the same nutrient analyses as complex compounds.
As more land is soil sampled and farmed sustainably, a move towards multi-nutrient prescription fertilisers is changing the blending model to produce tailored analyses to meet individual field requirements.
